Word 2016 Grammar Check For Mac Readability
Any Office 2016 for Windows version 16.0.7369.2024 or later (for Office 365) will have the Grammar and Style feature. But the ‘perpetual licence’ customers were left out. It seems Microsoft tried to argue that this was a ‘new’ feature for Office 2016 which non-subscribers don’t get. Customers rightly complained because Grammar has been part of Word for years and the ‘one-time’ purchasers of Office 2016 had every reason to expect it. It took until January 2017 for Microsoft to relent.
In versions starting with 2013, you have to enable the feature first, and then access it by running a spell and grammar check. Checking spelling and grammar in Word and Outlook happen in the, and offer a fairly solid way of proofing documents. There are some better grammar-checking add-ins for Office out there, but even if you have those enabled, you’ll still need to enable the built-in grammar checking to be able to use the readability statistics. Whether that’s worth it is really up to you. And if you don’t mind having grammar checking active, but just prefer not to be distracted by the squiggly underlines while you work, you can always.
The Readability Statistics dialog box includes the results of three such commonly accepted estimates. The readability estimates in Word consist of the following: Flesch Reading Ease, or readability based on the average number of syllables per word and the average number of words per sentence. Standard writing averages 60 to 70 on a 100-point scale. Hey guys, hoping you can help me out with a problem I’m having with Word 2016 on Mac. I’m having some issues out the Readability Statistics. Need to add all the options word 2016 has to offer for PC for MAC. Example: Building blocks, creating customized color themes, and the options button under file tab. I bought office 365 for MAC and the tools I need aren't even available. Customer Service couldn't even tell me that. They lied and said it had everything just like word 2016 for PC.
In the Editor Options window, select the Proofing tab. Enable both the “Check grammar with spelling” and “Show readability statistics” check boxes and then click OK. Note that in both Word and Outlook, you can deselect the options for checking spelling and grammar errors as you type if you find that distracting. How to View Readability Statistics Now that you’ve enabled reading statistics, checking the readability score of a document or a selection of text is simple. All you have to do is run a spell and grammar check. You can select specific text to check, or make sure nothing is selected to check the whole document. Initiate a spelling and grammar check by hitting F7 or by clicking the Proofing button in the status bar at the bottom of the window.

Flesch Reading Ease test This test rates text on a 100-point scale. The higher the score, the easier it is to understand the document. For most standard files, you want the score to be between 60 and 70. The formula for the Flesch Reading Ease score is: 206.835 – (1.015 x ASL) – (84.6 x ASW) where: ASL = average sentence length (the number of words divided by the number of sentences) ASW = average number of syllables per word (the number of syllables divided by the number of words) Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level test This test rates text on a U.S. School grade level. For example, a score of 8.0 means that an eighth grader can understand the document.
Shorter words with fewer syllables are easier to read, too. Both of these statistics are shown in the Averages section in the Readability Statistics window (above). If necessary, shorten some of the longer sentences to make the average smaller, and choose shorter simpler words. Get that Flesch Reading Ease score higher. Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level: This is another calculation based on the number of words in sentences and the number of syllables. The resulting figure is the US grade level.
(This step isn’t necessary for blank documents.) 9. When you’re ready to run a grammar check: 10. Select the Review tab. Select Spelling & Grammar. Change or ignore the results of your grammar check. Review your passive sentence percentage in the Readability Statistics window.

Disable the Spell Checker You may want to disable the spell checker entirely when working on documents that contain a lot of words the app doesn’t understand. To disable spell-checking, click File > Options > Proofing. Scroll down to the When correcting spelling and grammar in Word section and unmark the checkbox next to Check spelling as you type. It will prevent annoying red and blue lines from popping up all over your documents while you’re working. Instead, Word will only check spelling when you click the Spelling & Grammar button. Alternatively, you can disable the spell checker and/or grammar checker entirely for the document you’re working on. Go back to File > Options > Proofing, scroll down to the bottom of the window, and mark the checkboxes next to Hide spelling errors in this document only and Hide grammar errors in this document only as required.
